Is Beauty Skin Deep?

The goal is perfection

Undertone

Also called the undertone, it’s different from your complexion.  Your undertone will remain the same no matter how much sun you get.  So, to figure out your true skin tone, you need to look more than skin-deep. While your skin’s surface color can change, its tone is really determined by the undertones that come through.

This confusion about the two is why sometimes we pick out foundation or powder that looks great in the tube but clashes once we try it on.n

Am I a Warm, Cool, or Neutral?

How can I tell?

The Paper Test

The simplest test uses a plain white paper.  Hold the paper up to your face in natural sunlight and compare how your skin looks in contrast to the paper.  If your skin looks yellowish, greenish, or light brown, then you likely have a warm skin tone.  your skin looks pink, rosy, or blue, then you have a cool skin tone.  If your skin looks gray or ashen, then you have a neutral skin tone.  If you have rosacea, acne, or a deep tan, ask a friend to use a the paper test on the crease behind your ear instead.

Your veins

Some people recommend that you flip your hand palm-up and take a peek at your veins in the hand and wrist.  If your veins appear to be blue, you have cool skin.  If they appear green, then you have warm skin.  If it’s hard to tell, you probably have neutral skin.

Hello Mr. sun

How does you skin react to the sun?  People who tan easily rather than burn usually have warm skin tone, although sometimes women with ebony skin that doesn’t burn can also have cool undertones.  People who are neutral may fall into either group with regard to tanning or burning, but neutrals will not halve any appearance of olive, yellow, or ruddy skin.

Silver or Gold

Many people are more attracted to either silver or gold jewelry because of the way it looks against their skin.  If you like the way traditional yellow gold looks on your skin, you’re more likely to have warm or olive undertones.  Silver, platinum, and rose gold tends to look more flattering on cooler undertones.  If you tend to look good in either silver or gold and base your choice more on your outfit than on  your skin color, then you may have neutral undertones.

The Eye's on You

Although you might play with different eye-shadows, your natural eye color may provide some insights into your undertones.  Lighter eyes like blue and pale brown usually mean you have cool undertones, while gold flecks usually indicate warm undertones.  For example, ice blue usually means you have cool skin, while honey brown eyes usually means you have warm skin.
